SPNI's Unit for Law and the Environment advances environmental protection through legal and policy avenues. Until the early 1990s, SPNI was the only organization working in this arena. Today, the Unit for Law and the Environment:

• Undertakes legal action whenever decisions by the Israel Land Authority contradict sustainable land use policies.
• Serves on the National Planning and Construction Council, regional planning committees, and various subcommittees to represent the public’s interests.
• Provides legal advice and strategy recommendation to the various SPNI-led public campaigns throughout Israel.

Knowing that the “power of the people” resonates most effectively with decision makers, the Unit for Law and the Environment launched the Environmental Guardians program. This initiative

mobilizes SPNI members to contact their Knesset and local representatives about pressing environmental issues that affects Israel's sustainable future.
